The amount of time needed for noticeable weight loss after birth
depends upon how much weight you gained during your pregnancy. If you
packed on fifty or sixty pounds during pregnancy, you will not lose it
overnight. The first twenty pounds or so of pregnancy weight generally
comes off quite easily and quickly. This will still leave you with
thirty to forty pounds to lose. Now, if you hadn't already had a baby,
you wouldn't expect to lose that much weight in just a few short weeks,
or even in several months' time. Expect that it could take you up to a
year to get rid of the excess baby weight.
For the ultimate in
weight loss after birth, avoid any type of food that requires a label.
If it needs a label, it probably contains preservatives at the very
least, and most likely, sugar and refined carbohydrates that impede your
weight loss efforts. Stick to complex carbohydrates such as whole
grains, fruit and vegetables as well as sources of lean protein such as
poultry and fish. Eat often, every 3-4 hours to prevent you from
becoming overly hungry and binging on unhealthy choices.
You may find it difficult to return to your exact pre-pregnancy weight, but this doesn't mean that you won't experience a considerable weight loss after birth. You may find the last five or ten pounds the toughest to lose. If you just can't lose the last five pounds, don't be hard on yourself. Stick with a healthy eating program and regular exercise and you will see results. If you just can't seem to drop the last few pounds, are losing hair, feeling cold and have heavy periods, ask your physician to check if you have become hypothyroid after giving birth. It isn't terribly common, but it does happen, and the condition can be easily rectified with a daily dose of thyroid hormones.
Many women, however, find weight loss after birth really hard. If you are beginning a career as a stay-at-home mom, the temptations of a refrigerator that is accessible any time you want and cupboards stocked with favorite goodies can be overwhelming. The best plan is not to bring foods home that you have difficulty eating in moderate portions. If foods such as ice cream, potato chips and the like bring on binging, don't bring them home from the store.
One of the main concerns new mothers have (aside from the new baby) is weight loss after birth. Even before the baby is born, moms tend to fixate on just how fast they can lose the baby weight. Instead of worrying about immediate weight loss, it is far better to develop a plan of healthy eating and regular, moderate exercise that can produce real health benefits for years to come.
