Part of the reason that people believe this is that they feel the water will somehow replace there hunger. However, by drinking more water with your meal it will not in most cases reduce the consumption of food you eat. It is a fact that if you drink large quantities of water with your meals you will feel full for a short period. But when the water leaves your stomach you will have the same hunger. The physiological trigger to cause you to stop eating in most people is to eat enough food so that you feel satisfied. Since water has no calories like food it can't satisfy that trigger.
